Forest Management Plan

Barkley Community Forest Management Plan

The BCFC General Manager and Board have prepared an innovative management plan for the community forest which is based on the principle of maintaining ecosystem function and a sustainable forestry business for current and future generations.

The plan contains resource inventory information and sets objectives and strategies for the management of natural resources within the community forest. This in turn guides the timber supply analysis which determined the sustainable annual allowable rate of timber harvest for the community forest to be 12,600 m3/year.

Highlights of the Plan:

  • A biodiversity management zone has been established to provide ecosystem representation and connectivity throughout the community forest.

  • A minimum of 30% of all ecosystems in the community forest are represented in the Biodiversity Management Zone and reserved areas.

  • The amount of old forest will not drop below 25% and over time will increase to 58% of the community forest.

  • LiDAR data has been used to generate accurate stream and road network inventories.

  • After 35 years, the sustainable rate of harvest begins to increase from 12,600 m3/year to 19,645 m3/year as second growth stands grow to maturity.
